9 location ideas for your next photo session

For locations in Red Deer check out this blog.

1. Mountains

You’ve probably thought of this already but I have to put it at number one because mountains make for the most incredible photos! Banff is an obvious choice but I also love to shoot in Kananaskis and around Abraham Lake. Those areas usually have less crowds, are just as beautiful, and require no entrance fees! There’s many lakes & ponds to choose from along the highway in Kananaskis, they are easy to access and offer great views.

2. Badlands

The Canadian Badlands are up there with the mountains for me! The vast landscapes make for some dramatic images, especially if you plan it for golden hour! The way the light shines through the hills is truly incredible to witness. I’ve only had the opportunity to do one shoot out there and it was at Horsethief Canyon which is about 2 hours from both Calgary & Red Deer.

3. Your favourite cafe, restaurant, or brewery

This is a great idea if you’re nervous to hop in front of the camera, you can loosen up with a few drinks and eat some delicious food before going on a walk around the neighbourhood to get a variety of indoor AND outdoor photos. Make sure you always get permission before you start and purchase something to support the local business!

4. Local Parks

Local parks are perfect if you don’t want to go for a long drive but still want a natural & scenic background for your photos. All of the ones I’m sharing are located in Red Deer since that’s where I live but I know Calgary & Edmonton have many great parks as well! Check out your cities website for a list of parks if you don’t have a favourite already.

5. Downtown

I love walking downtown and exploring all of the different nooks and crannies! This is perfect if you don’t want a ton of natural elements in your photos. You can create some wicked images using the alleys, windows, bricks, stairs, and tall buildings all found downtown. Red Deer also has a stunning garden at city hall if you wanted both natural & urban elements for your photos!

6. Corn Maze

This is a fun one, especially for young kids! At Kraay Family Farm there is more than just a corn maze, they have carnival games, a wicked cool pick up truck, a beautiful sun flower maze, and a bunch of different animals you can visit!

7. Greenhouse

If you’re a plant lover like I am then this is perfect for you! Get your photo taken amongst the luscious greenery at your local nursery or botanical gardens! This is a great option if its’s raining the day your shoot is scheduled but you don’t want to rebook for another day. You get to stay dry while still having that natural backdrop and greenhouse light is always dreamy!

8. Beaches

I have to admit I always forget about the sandy beaches in Alberta but they would be a perfect location for a sunset shoot, especially if you love the water! If it’s hot out you could go in for a dip to cool down, that would make for both a memorable session and some beautiful photos.

9. In your own home!

Why not have your photos taken where you feel the most comfortable? If you or a member of your family are nervous to have photos done this is the perfect solution! It’s a lot easier to feel at ease when you’re in the comfort and privacy of your own home. Plus you can easily include your pets in the photos, which is honestly the most important thing here.
